Health care for the homeless population sounds like a difficult mission, but the Baptist Memorial Health Care Operation Outreach health care van for the homeless is fulfilling its goal to make quality health care more accessible to those who need it most.
The Baptist Operation Outreach van is a mobile health care unit. Formerly operating as the HOPE Health Center, the Baptist Operation Outreach van provides acute and primary care, information on disease prevention and guidance to Memphians without permanent housing. All services are free and are provided with respect and confidentiality.
Operation Outreach patients have direct and immediate access to medical examinations, health information, illness prevention, medications and referral services. A certified nurse practitioner delivers the following services:
- Screenings for common health problems
- Health and developmental assessments for children
- Immunizations and other preventive care
- Diagnosis of medical problems and health needs
- Treatment and management of specific disease problems
- Treatment of minor injuries
The Baptist Operation Outreach van operates two days a week, at the Memphis Union Mission on Mondays and at Catholic Charities’ Dozier House on Tuesdays. Staff on the van treat as many patients in a day as they treated in a week at the Hope Health Center, which was at a fixed location.
The Baptist Operation Outreach van program is a partnership between Baptist and Christ Community Health Services, which owns the van and operates it an additional two days a week. CCHS is a faith-based not-for-profit health care organization that provides primary medical, dental and obstetrical care to two of the most medically underserved sections of Memphis, Tenn. Its first clinic, which Baptist Memorial Health Care helped fund, opened in September 1995 with four physicians. Since that time, the provider staff has grown tremendously, and in 2003, CCHS was designated a federally qualified health center by the federal Bureau of Primary Health Care.
The Baptist Operation Outreach van is Baptist Memorial Health Care’s signature program and the cornerstone of our community involvement program. It is an extension of Baptist’s mission, which mirrors the three-fold ministry of Christ—preaching, teaching and healing. The Baptist Operation Outreach van program is a member of the Greater Memphis Interagency Coalition for the Homeless, an organization that helps ensure homeless provider agencies and homeless people can participate in planning for the “Continuum of Care” system of services, shelter and housing.
