  Healthcare

A recent city study of health among the homeless revealed that homeless people are twice as likely to die as the general population and suffer a wide range of debilitating and chronic illnesses. Project Renewal's Medical Department provides integrated psychiatric and primary care for homeless men and women regardless of their ability to pay and where it is easily accessible to them.

  Medical Clinics
Project Renewal provides comprehensive medical care to clients at our residential programs at Third Street, Kenton Hall,New Providence and Fort Washington . Staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, outreach workers and othersupport staff, these state-of-the-art community-based clinics work closely with our MedVan, as well as our shelter-based psychiatric and case management staffs to treat people who suffer the medical ravages of homelessness. In 2000, the clinics were awarded a grant from the Health Resourcesand Services Administration's (HRSA) HIV/AIDS Bureau to deliver HIV prevention and counseling services.

  MedVan :Mobile Medical Clinic
MedVanOur fully outfitted MedVan provides professional primary medical care to homeless people 'where they are' - on the streets, in shelters, at soup kitchens and at drop-in centers. Equipped with two fully operational examining rooms and staffed by a team that includes a physician, a phyisician's assistant, socialworker, nurse practitioner, a pharmacist, a psychiatrist and driver/aide, the MedVan was among the first mobile medical units serving homeless people in the country when it started operations in 1986. Today, it offers preventative, urgent and HIV/AIDS services in addition to primary care. MedVan provides healthcare to 2,000 homeless New Yorkers annually, operating six days a week at 15 sites in Manhattan, Harlem and Brooklyn.

  ScanVan

ScanVan pics

Launched in 2007, the ScanVan is the nation's first mobile radiology clinic to provide both mammograms and chest x-rays to homeless and poor patients.  The ScanVan meets two critical needs: serving poor and homeless women with little or no access to breast health services and screening for tuberculosis. The staff provides counseling, education, and initiates and ensures follow-up treatment for all positive screenings. In 2008 we merged with Womens Outreach Network to expand our practice to 150 community sites in Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten Island.

Medical Imaging Magazine focuses on the "Mobile Mission" of Project Renewal's ScanVan.
