Discussion from Symposium for Igor 2008/09/18 23:33 Karma: 3
Guys,
This e-mail's from Igor van Laere, and he'd like to have us write some stuff up about reflections from the Conference. I think it'd be really awesome if we could start a discussion here about it, and perhaps compile some thoughts for him individually...Let's get our voices out there.

Subject: impressium street medicine symposium

dear Jim

For the ENHW newsletter number 7, maybe students who visited the
conference
in San Juan, would be so kind to share a few thoughts

400-500 words, deadline October 5th, 2008
describe your own pathways into street medicine and the 4th conference
in
San Juan
describe what the conference did to your personal view on marginalised
care,
and the role that street health workers who do this work play for you
place your impression within the medical curriculum and vision on your
future career

find a student to discuss these 3 questions and both write your own
story

jim, would you share this with the students?

great

igor

Hey everyone I wrote for the ENHW newsletter a while back so an individ one from me would not be super interesting but I'd happily contribute to a collaborative article if people are interested, and might be great to reflect our new found international teamwork we've got going on.

A few ideas
*who we are
*Inspiration of hearing about different outreach programmes at the symposium- successes, challenges- the importance of collective learning and sharing ideas so we can help each other move forward
*Opportunity to see the local programme and reflections on this
*The importance of involving students (investment in the future etc), as the street medicine institute begins to form we are honoured to be included as one of the key principles of the institute
*None of this would have been possible without a few key people encouraging student involvement and therefore encouraging other street medicine programmes/ networks to integrate students

Any thoughts?
Lucie

With it only needing to be around 400-500 words, I think the ideas Lucie outlined would be great and more than enough. The way she outlined it answers all the questions listed by Igor and could serve as summary of the conference(each idea between the intro of the group and the thank you practically describes Wed-Fri in order).

If no one else has started on anything or has time, I could throw a very loose draft together at the beginning of next week. Then we could bounce it back and forth between each other adding ideas and making improvements. Lucie we definitely will need you on this part seeing as your the only one of us who actually knows how to write in proper English. What do yall think?

Hey everybody,
Put together a rough draft for the ENHW write up for Igor. In the spirit of compiled thoughts from individuals and international teamwork mentioned earlier by Emma and Lucie, I was hoping we could use the forum to change, edit and share ideas on what to include and ways to improve this draft. If some of it already looks plagiarized that's because I took as much as I could from previous posts and comments from the conference we made. I think he was hoping to have it by Sunday and if y'alls weekend work effort is anything like mine, maybe we should have something put together by Thursday afternoon/Friday morning.-Kevin

Well done Kevin, not bad for a hick!!

I've done some edits (feel free to ignore if you disagree) has anyone else got any changes they'd like to make?

Also would be good to have some references so please somebody add some if you fancy.

I'm afraid I'm away for a weekend of constitution editing (yes it is really as unexciting as it sounds) for the charity I am involved in so will prob not get a chance to check again before submission.

Hope all well

Lucie

Great job Kevin and Lucy! Sorry I couldn't help earlier in this process. I and the other Morgantown kids have just been trying to keep our heads above water since we go back. Luckily the test test is over and life is as normal as it gets in med school again!

The article sounds great. I added two of the things that Lucy suggested, a reference for the homeless book club and a salutation from the "Street med students" and then changed a couple of grammatical things.

I missed your Thursday evening/Friday morning deadline Keven, but not by much, so hopefully I'm not too late!

On an unrelated note, the facebook group is up and running, but I can't find anyone! So look for me (Joanna Adkins) or search for the group "street medicine students".
