SMISC Webinar- Street Psychiatry: Helping the People Who Need It Most
Wednesday, May 13, 2026, 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM CDT
Category: SMISC Webinar
Join the Street Medicine Institute Student Coalition on Wednesday, May 13th at 6:30 PM EST / 3:30 PM PST for a webinar led by Dr. Shane Collins from Keck School of Medicine of USC and Lisette Carmona, LCSW. This webinar will provide an introduction to street psychiatry, framed through the clinical and ethical lens of providing a preferential option for those most marginalized by traditional mental health care systems. We will explore how specialized psychiatric care is implemented within the USC Street Medicine model, moving the practice from the clinical office to sidewalks, encampments, and freeway underpasses to deliver compassionate, effective care to people experiencing unsheltered homelessness (PEUH) on the streets of Los Angeles. Dr. Collins will share insights and lessons learned from their firsthand experience navigating the unique challenges of the street environment—where traditional clinical boundaries are reimagined to prioritize trust, radical empathy, and trauma-informed healing—and consider how lessons from street psychiatry can be applied to improve care across diverse treatment settings.
