The Street Medicine Institute Student Coalition is excited to bring you our next webinar, Approach to Homeless Individuals with Serious Mental Illness

Led by Dr. Emma Lo, a fourth-year psychiatry resident at the Connecticut Mental Health Center through Yale University, this webinar aims to help us:

  • Define serious mental illness
  • Appreciate the higher burden of serious mental illness among homeless populations, particularly the unsheltered homeless
  • Approach seriously mentally ill homeless individuals encountered on the street in a respectful, safe and effective way that is distinctly different from a traditional clinical setting
  • Understand how one’s own countertransference contributes to the dynamic of an interaction (e.g. fear, implicit bias, preconceived agendas, boundary transgressions)
  • Know when to ask for help for a potential psychiatric emergency

When: Tuesday, June 18, 8 p.m. EDT
Where: Via Zoom at https://msu.zoom.us/j/438578904 (please download beforehand if you haven't used it before!)
Meet Dr. Lo: Emma Lo is a fourth-year psychiatry resident who founded and developed a street psychiatry program in New Haven, CT. She will soon begin as the full-time street psychiatry attending for this program. She also has experience working with homeless populations from volunteer and art projects at Haverford College outside of Philadelphia, PA; with Dr. Jim Withers at Operation Safety Net in Pittsburgh, PA; and through her work starting a student-run Street Medicine program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY. She is passionate about involving trainees in Street Medicine efforts to promote a more humanistic approach to taking care of our society’s most vulnerable people.

We look forward to seeing you at the webinar! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out at [email protected].
